While our aim is always to save your natural teeth, there are times when removing a tooth is the best option for your oral health. At Blue Door Dental Practice, we provide gentle, careful tooth extractions for NHS and private patients in Dumfries and the surrounding areas.

When Might a Tooth Need to Be Removed?

Your dentist may recommend an extraction if a tooth:

  • Is badly decayed or damaged beyond repair
  • Has a severe infection that cannot be treated with root canal treatment
  • Is loose due to advanced gum disease
  • Is a wisdom tooth causing pain, infection or crowding
  • Is causing overcrowding, or needs removing ahead of orthodontic treatment
  • Has been broken or cracked following an injury

We will always explain why an extraction is being recommended and discuss any alternative treatments available to you.

Types of Tooth Extraction

Simple Extraction
Used for teeth that are fully visible in the mouth. The tooth is gently loosened and removed under local anaesthetic.

Surgical Extraction
Some teeth, such as broken teeth or impacted wisdom teeth, may need a more involved approach. This may require a small incision in the gum to access and remove the tooth safely. If a surgical extraction is more complex, your dentist may refer you to a specialist.

What to Expect During Your Extraction

1. Assessment
Your dentist will examine the tooth, take an X-ray if needed and talk you through the procedure, answering any questions you may have.

2. Numbing the Area
A local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth and surrounding area, so you should feel pressure but no pain.

3. Removing the Tooth
The tooth is carefully loosened and removed. Our team will keep you informed and comfortable throughout.

4. Recovery
Once the tooth is out, we will place gauze over the area to help a blood clot form and give you clear aftercare instructions.

Feeling Nervous?

We understand that having a tooth removed can feel worrying. Our friendly and empathetic team will take the time to put you at ease, explain each step and go at a pace that suits you. If you feel anxious about your treatment, please let us know so we can support you.

Aftercare Following an Extraction

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting or drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours, as these can slow healing
  • Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth
  • Avoid hot drinks and strenuous exercise on the day of your extraction
  • After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water after meals to keep the area clean
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following the instructions on the packet

If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding or swelling that gets worse after a few days, contact the practice as soon as possible.

Replacing a Missing Tooth

Once your mouth has healed, we can talk to you about options for replacing the missing tooth, such as dentures or bridges. Filling the gap can help protect your remaining teeth, support your bite and restore your smile.

I recently had an appointment with Hassan. It’s been ages since I’ve been to the dentist but Hassan made me feel really at ease and was thorough, attentive and professional throughout. He took the time to explain each step of what he was doing. He also gave some great advice for at home dental care. I would highly recommend him to anyone in the Dumfries area!

I had an appointment for a check up with Christina this morning. Assisting was Jo and i was introduced to trainee Ewan. Jo went over my medical history and Christina checked my teeth. I had visited the new hygienist a few weeks prior to my appointment so the check up didnt take long. Christina gave me good advice on taking care of my remaining teeth, and advice on improving my denture wearing. I booked in for a 6mth follow up appointment, i would have name checked the lovely receptionist, but i didnt get her name, sorry. Her telephone manner is great. Thank you😀x

Today I saw George, the dentist, and Hassan, the hygienist, for my check-up and hygiene appointment, and I have to say I was so impressed with how caring and reassuring they both were. George was incredibly informative and took the time to explain why I needed certain dental work by showing me my X-rays. I've never had a dentist talk me through them before, and it made such a difference. Knowing exactly why treatment is needed makes the whole experience so much less daunting. Hassan was just as reassuring during my hygiene appointment. He explained every step of the process as he went along, which really helped me feel relaxed and at ease. From check-in to check-out, the whole team was fantastic. A special mention to nurses Ash and Chloe, who checked in on me throughout my appointments and made me feel so well looked after. Ailsa and the reception team were brilliant and efferent in getting me rebooked in with the practice What a lovely, caring team. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them!

I had an appointment with dental therapist Hassan and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I was feeling quite anxious about going to the dentist, but Hassan was incredibly reassuring, kind and patient throughout my appointment. He made me feel comfortable and listened to my concerns without making me feel judged. I genuinely feel that he has helped me get my oral health back on track and has given me the confidence to take better care of my teeth. Most importantly, Hassan has helped me feel confident about going to the dentist again, which is something I never thought I’d say! I’m really grateful for his care and would highly recommend him to anyone who feels nervous or anxious about dental treatment.
