Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, often due to deep decay, a crack or an injury, it can cause pain and lead to an abscess.
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, then fills and seals it to prevent further infection.
Signs You May Need Root Canal Treatment
- Persistent or throbbing toothache
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums
- A small, pimple-like bump on the gum
- Darkening or discolouration of a tooth
Not every infected tooth causes symptoms, which is why regular check-ups are so important. If you notice any of these signs, contact the practice as soon as possible.
Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

The Root Canal Treatment Process
1. Examination and X-Rays
Your dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to assess the extent of the infection and the shape of the root canals.
2. Numbing the Area
A local anaesthetic is used so the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb. Most patients find the procedure no more uncomfortable than having a filling.
3. Removing the Infection
A small opening is made in the tooth, and the infected pulp is carefully removed. The root canals are then cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
4. Filling and Sealing
The canals are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed to protect against further infection. A temporary filling may be placed if treatment is completed over more than one visit.
5. Restoring the Tooth
Once treatment is complete, the tooth is restored with a permanent filling or, in many cases, a crown to strengthen and protect it.
Aftercare
It is normal for the tooth to feel a little tender for a few days after treatment. Over-the-counter pain relief can usually help with any discomfort. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored, and keep up good oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing.
