When Might a Tooth Need to Be Removed?
Your dentist may recommend an extraction if a tooth:
- Is badly decayed or damaged beyond repair
- Has a severe infection that cannot be treated with root canal treatment
- Is loose due to advanced gum disease
- Is a wisdom tooth causing pain, infection or crowding
- Is causing overcrowding, or needs removing ahead of orthodontic treatment
- Has been broken or cracked following an injury
We will always explain why an extraction is being recommended and discuss any alternative treatments available to you.
Types of Tooth Extraction
Simple Extraction
Used for teeth that are fully visible in the mouth. The tooth is gently loosened and removed under local anaesthetic.
Surgical Extraction
Some teeth, such as broken teeth or impacted wisdom teeth, may need a more involved approach. This may require a small incision in the gum to access and remove the tooth safely. If a surgical extraction is more complex, your dentist may refer you to a specialist.
What to Expect During Your Extraction
1. Assessment
Your dentist will examine the tooth, take an X-ray if needed and talk you through the procedure, answering any questions you may have.
2. Numbing the Area
A local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth and surrounding area, so you should feel pressure but no pain.
3. Removing the Tooth
The tooth is carefully loosened and removed. Our team will keep you informed and comfortable throughout.
4. Recovery
Once the tooth is out, we will place gauze over the area to help a blood clot form and give you clear aftercare instructions.

Aftercare Following an Extraction
- Avoid rinsing, spitting or drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours, as these can slow healing
- Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth
- Avoid hot drinks and strenuous exercise on the day of your extraction
- After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water after meals to keep the area clean
- Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following the instructions on the packet
If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding or swelling that gets worse after a few days, contact the practice as soon as possible.
Replacing a Missing Tooth
Once your mouth has healed, we can talk to you about options for replacing the missing tooth, such as dentures or bridges. Filling the gap can help protect your remaining teeth, support your bite and restore your smile.
